shiddy work
It’s almost hard to make this happen. Days, maybe weeks of irresponsibility and indifference … anger sprinkled in, I’m sure.
You can see how it played out.
Can gets filled. Someone doesn’t do his job. Someone’s boss doesn’t do hers.
A few people add the overflow. “I pay rent for this shit?”
People look away. “I’m busy.”
Someone still doesn’t do his job. Someone’s boss still doesn’t do hers.
It becomes impossible to balance another bag on top so, “Fuck it. Let’s send a message.”
Someone still doesn’t do his job. Someone’s boss still doesn’t do hers.
All kinds of choices along the way. Mine. Yours.
The metaphors are easy.
This is us … all over the place.
Doesn’t have to be.
More trash…
I’ve been taking pictures of overflowing trash cans for years. Might seem strange but as a speaker, I’ve learned to take pictures of anything I think might be even slightly helpful in illustrating points to an audience (funny and not).
It was the picture above — the play on the literal and metaphorical shoddy work tied into poop bags — that I believe has finally ended my quest for the perfect overflowing trash can picture.
Some of my other favorites over the years…
On the side of a road just outside Philadelphia’s airport. I think this is the first ‘No Urinating’ sign I’ve ever seen. Kind of people to follow the rule.
A trash can made from the base of a broken street pole in downtown Richmond, VA.
Iconic overlook in Positano, Italy.
Up the road in Naples, Italy.
J’aime Paris.
And finally, back home in Richmond. (Fortunately, we have much more to enjoy than not.)
All this had me thinking about Oscar. (He lives in a trash can.)
How’d they make the Oscar video? (Wow!)

Sweet friend, could it be, perhaps, that public participation overwhelmed expectations? I see a neighborhood taking considerate care not to poop and run, as in the olden days before the clean-up-after-your-pet movement. Someone should contact the collector/s and let them know they have serious job security, the disposal stop has been wildly successful, and they need to add another weekly trip to gather the offerings.
This was awesome, Sam...I don't know how I missed seeing that skit on SNL. Check on instagram...I sent you a post on a sanitation worker today....BEFORE I saw this post
